April
For those that would like to experience the sensation of freefalling without
the fear of jumping out a plane, there is an alternative.
Fully attired in skydiver gear, you can enter a $4 million chamber where
massive props suck you upwards, and suddenly you’re not exactly falling, and
you’re not exactly floating either. This is a wind tunnel, and it is designed to
mimic the sensation of skydiving.
Two minutes in the chamber is equal to two skydives from 13,000 feet, but
like the real thing, it does require some know-how. Your body has to be
perfectly positioned in the classic arch to control the wind; otherwise you
might find yourself crashing into the see-through walls. Don’t worry, you’re
supplied with a helmet, and a certified instructor to steady you. Once you’ve
got the feel of the arch, you can begin to play around a little, leaning back to
get more altitude, using your hands as rudders to spin you around. It’s over
pretty quick, this banana, like a small, delicious fruit you quickly wolf down
and beg for another. Given its rarity and cost though, the wind tunnel is
strictly a banana for those looking for a quick thrill.
