April
The world is divided into four groups of people. Those who like marzipan,
those who don’t like marzipan, those that have jumped out a plane, and those
that dream of doing so. There is something about plummeting towards earth at
terminal velocity that is so life affirming, so all-thrilling, that you’ll never
be able to forget it. Going tandem, whereby you’re securely fastened to a
qualified instructor, means all you have to do is arch back and enjoy the ride.
And you will enjoy it, once you’ve conquered the very natural fear of jumping
out a moving plane. Anyone will tell you that’s the scariest part, because once
you’re out the door, it’s an adrenaline jackpot that will paste a smile on your
face so wide you could park an aircraft carrier between your front teeth. And
here in Southern California, the conditions are ideal, for once that parachute
opens, and open it always does, you can gaze upon a 360 degree view of gorgeous
valleys and mountains, as you gently drift to the ground.
From 13,000ft, you’ll freefall for about a minute, but it’s over so quickly
you’ll be glad you had those pictures and video taken on the way down. On TV, it
looks like skydivers float, but it’s not until you do it yourself that you
experience the real sensation of falling, fully aware, pushing gravity to its
very limit. In the realm of Blue Bananas, where experience is all, skydiving
must surely rank amongst the ripest of the bunch.
